The Beehive, like the Block we encountered earlier, is a still life—a pattern that remains unchanged from one generation to the next. However, it introduces us to a more intricate form of stability in the Game of Life.
Let’s examine why the Beehive remains stable:
- Each live cell in the Beehive has exactly two or three live neighbors, allowing it to survive.
- None of the dead cells surrounding the Beehive have exactly three live neighbors, preventing new cells from coming to life.
This delicate balance of live and dead cells creates a stable structure that’s more complex than the simple Block. The Beehive demonstrates that stability in the Game of Life can come in various forms and sizes.
The Beehive introduces us to the concept of “edge interactions” in stable patterns. Notice how the cells at the points of the Beehive each have three live neighbors, while the cells along the sides each have two. This interaction between edge cells and their neighbors is crucial in forming stable structures more complex than the Block.
Interestingly, the Beehive can be seen as two failed attempts at creating new life. The two dead cells in the center each have three live neighbors—normally enough to bring a new cell to life. However, they also have each other as neighbors, which would lead to overpopulation in the next generation. This balance between potential growth and overcrowding is what keeps the Beehive stable.
The Beehive plays important roles in more complex Game of Life patterns:
- As a stable component in larger structures.
- As a “eater” that can destroy other patterns without being destroyed itself.
- As a reflector that can alter the path of moving patterns like Gliders.
